As a school we follow ‘Talk for Writing’. Year 2 will be completing writing linked to narrative, poetry and non-chronological reports. We will be using the texts; Georgie and the dragon and a range of instruction based texts to inform our own writing of a set of instructions.

Reading and Spelling

Phonics will continue to be a part of the daily timetable in Year 2 for some pupils to cater for their needs in reading and provide them with a solid foundation of phonic and early comprehension skills. Whilst some children will be in groups for phonics, other pupils will be continuing to use the No Nonsense spelling programme and Accelerated Reader comprehension quizzes linked to the self-selected books your child brings home. In the No Nonsense spelling lessons pupils focus on a weekly spelling rule and complete activities to embed the knowledge of it. Children will also be given allocated time daily to read and complete linked quizzes to their text using the Accelerated Reader online platform.

We follow Power Maths at St James. The units we will be covering in the Summer Term are –
Weight, volume and temperature
Length and height
Position and direction

In addition to this, we do rapid recall daily that focuses on a different statement each week based on what the children need to be able to recall quickly. They are tested on these every Friday. We will continue with 5 in 5 daily which recaps mental maths recall skills that pupils have been previously taught this year. Children will also be provided with access to the TT Rock stars platform to practise times tables. The focus will be the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables.

Over the Summer Term children will be learning about growing up and how we change over time. We will find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air) and learn about the offspring of animals and humans which grow into adults. To end the year we will be completing a topic called ‘Taking Care’. During this journey of lessons children will be describing the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene.

In the Summer Term we begin with an Art & Design project about the Willow Pattern. The children will be learning about the origin of the design, the story it tells and using inspiration from it to design and create their own clay tile using the elements of the Willow Pattern.   Following this will be our History topic called ‘Women Who Changed the World’. We will be focussing on two historical heroines; Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks and answering the key question ‘How have Rosa Parks and Emmeline Pankhurst changed the lives of people today?’ through our learning. During Geography this term the pupils will be completing and international study about India and its capital city New Dehli. The children will learn about the location of the country and its capital city, climate and culture as well as making comparisons to their own country. In Design Technology pupils will be completing a textiles project about making puppets. Pupils will learn about the templating process when working with textiles and how to join the pieces of fabrics effectively to produce and outcome to meet a design criteria.  During our computing lessons Year Two will continue to use the Purple Mash platform.  Pupils will be learning about spreadsheets and how to use them as well as creating their own. Following this, pupils will also be learning about coding. In P.E pupils will be learning the game of cricket and the key skills required to play in each position. To finish the academic year children will be learning a variety of skills linked to athletic sports and we will also be holding our annual sports day event. In Religious studies Year Two will be focusing on the holy places and buildings linked to faiths and learning about how Christians, Sikhs and Muslims worship. They will focus on the holy book of each faith and think about the values we can learn from the stories shared. For our Music lessons we use the Charanga music platform. The children will be using a variety of percussion instruments to explore rhythm and pulse to music as well as learning and performing songs. This term’s song is titled ‘The Friendship Song’ which is linked to a pop genre of music and to finish the Summer Term the pupils will explore a selection of classical music and the composers in our ‘Reflect, Rewind and Replay unit.

How you can help

Please read with your child daily if you can, if not at least 3 times a week. All children have their log ins and access to the MYON platform for extra reading texts at home and the Accelerated Reader comprehension quiz platform to complete questions linked to the texts they have read.
Please also take time to help your child learn the spellings that are sent home weekly.
