Science

At St James, our science provision aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.

We have a high-quality science curriculum which provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the natural world. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Every half term the children are taught a different science unit with progressive scientific skills and concepts being taught.  We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

At our school, we want every child to develop curiosity, confidence, and a deep understanding of the world around them. That’s why we use the White Rose Science scheme - a carefully designed, research-informed curriculum that supports high-quality science teaching and learning.

White Rose Science provides:
 • A clear, sequenced curriculum - Learning builds progressively from year to year, ensuring pupils revisit and deepen key scientific ideas while avoiding gaps or unnecessary repetition.
• Strong emphasis on working scientifically - Children don’t just learn facts - they investigate, test, question, observe and draw conclusions using real scientific methods.
 • Engaging, practical lessons - Activities are hands?on and meaningful, helping pupils to develop curiosity and a genuine love of science.
• High-quality resources and explanations - Lessons come with clear models, vocabulary, diagrams, and teacher guidance, supporting consistent, high?standard delivery across the school.
 • Inclusive and accessible learning - Content is designed so all pupils can access scientific concepts, while carefully structured challenges stretch higher-attaining learners.
• Consistency with the National Curriculum - Every unit is fully aligned with National Curriculum expectations, ensuring coverage, depth and readiness for later learning.

By using White Rose Science, we ensure that every child receives a rich, coherent and engaging science education that nurtures curiosity, builds strong foundations and prepares them for the scientific world of tomorrow.
